Situator Technology

Situator incorporates state-of-the-art technologies to deliver a stable yet scalable platform for Situation Management. Situator’s open architecture is based on Windows, .NET and SOAP standards and is easily ported to other environments. Support for CAP (Common Alerting Protocol) enables Situator quick and painless integration with virtually any edge device beyond the growing library of supported devices. For mobile communications, Situator uses an IP network, GPRS and other mobile protocols supporting a variety of communication methods including email, SMS and MMS messaging.

Situator is designed to provide real-time responsiveness in emergency situations:
Time-critical response operations get higher priority than background administration functions. Situator’s “Watchdog” function monitors both internal Situator services and the activity of all connected devices and systems to ensure continuous availability. With “Digital Maintenance” Situator can manage maintenance schedules and activate recurring maintenance procedures for connected devices and systems, reducing control room overhead. Both the Situator application server and database server run on Windows Servers, capable of managing even the largest multi-site implementations. Situator servers can optionally run in Microsoft Cluster configurations, eliminating single-point-of-failure risk by providing system redundancy and hot-standby.

Integral to the Situator architecture is a comprehensive and flexible security approach that can be adapted to any security-conscious environment. It is based on the three fundamental principles of IT security: Authentication – including a flexible password policy, communication through SSL encryption and verification using a combination of user ID, password, IP address and physical (e.g., MAC) address; Authorization – application and resource privilege control defined by roles such as Planners, Control Room personnel, Administrators and Mobile Responders; Audit – all security and administrative activity is logged for viewing and reporting.
